What are the different iPhone replacement screen qualities?
iPhone replacement screens come in different technologies and quality tiers. Knowing the difference helps you choose the best option for your needs:
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)
LCD screens use a backlight to illuminate pixels. They are durable and cost-effective, which makes them a solid choice for budget-focused repairs. Colours and contrast are lower than OLED, although everyday usability is strong.
Soft OLED
Soft OLED panels use a flexible substrate. They deliver deeper blacks, higher contrast, richer colours, and wide viewing angles compared to LCD. The flexible construction often provides better drop resilience than rigid alternatives.
Hard OLED
Hard OLED panels are built on a rigid glass substrate. They are cheaper to produce but more prone to shattering on impact and do not meet our durability standards. For this reason, we do not sell Hard OLED screens.
Refurbished OEM
Refurbished OEM screens are genuine OEM displays that have been professionally refurbished with new front glass. They retain factory colour targets, brightness, and touch performance.
Quick pick: choose LCD for affordability, Soft OLED for the best value in terms of cost and performance, or Refurbished OEM for a genuine OEM display with new front glass and factory performance.
Compare screen types at a glance| Type | Pros | Trade offs | Best for | We sell? |
|---|
| LCD (In Cell LCD) | Budget-friendly, reliable everyday use | Lower contrast and colour than OLED | Cost-effective repairs | Yes |
| Soft OLED | Deep blacks, high contrast, wide angles, better drop resilience than rigid OLED | Higher price than LCD | Near-OEM look and feel; superb value | Yes |
| Hard OLED | Lower cost to produce | More prone to shattering; inferior durability/value | Not recommended | No |
| Refurbished OEM | Genuine OEM panel; factory colour/brightness and excellent touch accuracy | Premium price tier; limited availability by model | Factory performance | Yes |
Feature transfer and calibration
Some models require transferring small parts such as the earpiece speaker assembly, sensors, or shields from the original screen. Use correct alignment and controlled torque to maintain fit and reduce light bleed. When reassembling, install new display adhesive for proper sealing - see iPhone adhesives & seals. If your device supports colour calibration features such as True Tone, specialised tools may be needed to read and write display data during repair.
Which iPhones have OLED screens?
Examples include iPhone X, iPhone XS and XS Max, iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max, and all models from iPhone 12 onwards, including the 12, 13, 14 and 15 families.
Which iPhones have LCD screens?
Examples include iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone SE models, and earlier generations such as iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, 7 and 7 Plus, and 6s and 6s Plus.
Knowing when to replace your iPhone screen
It is not always obvious when to replace your iPhone screen. Look for these signs:
- Cracked or broken glass
- Touch not responding, lagging, or registering ghost touches
- Bright spots, discoloured patches, or lines on the display
- Foreign objects or visible damage under the glass
- A blank display when powered on after ruling out other issues
Reasons to replace your iPhone screen
Replacing a damaged screen restores function and helps prevent further damage.
- Productivity: responsive touch improves typing and navigation
- Appearance: a clear, intact screen improves look and feel
- Prevent damage: cracks can spread and allow liquid or dust ingress
- Save money: a screen repair usually costs less than a device upgrade
