LCD or liquid crystal display is a flat-screen technology that uses several layers of material with a backlight to produce images on a screen. Our LCD displays are a quality product that is both durable, reliable and is backed by our 2 year Australian warranty.

How does an LCD screen work?

Liquid crystals are made up of organic molecules that align themselves according to how much electricity they’re supplied with. When you apply electricity to them, they change their orientation to let more or less light through. This process is called polarisation and acts as a gatekeeper for the light.

Each time you look at your iPhone LCD screen, thousands of these liquid crystals are aligned. This allows light from the backlight behind them to pass through them and create images on your screen.

Key benefits of LCD screens

• Durability. LCD screens are renowned for their durability and longevity with regular use.
• Affordability. Compared with OLED screens, LCDs are relatively cheap and easy to manufacture resulting in being considerably more affordable for the end user.
• Colour Accuracy. LCDs emit more accurate colours than other technologies, however are just not as bright as OLED screens.

Have there been any improvements in iPhone LCD technology?

From the factory, Apple uses IPS LCDs, which are a more expensive version of LCD on its mid-level to high-end phones. iPhone models with IPS LCDs include iPhone 11, iPhone XR, and the iPhone 8/8 Plus with the iPhone 11 and iPhone XR featuring IPS liquid retina displays, which we break down below.

IPS LCD stands for "In-Plane Switching Liquid Crystal Display." It has a number of advantages over other types of LCDs including better sunlight legibility, greater viewing angles, and superior colour accuracy.

Liquid Retina Displays are the most advanced LCD technology ever in an iPhone offering improved colour accuracy by delivering brighter colours and deeper blacks.

Knowing when to replace your iPhone screen can sometimes be not as straightforward as you might think; follow the below determinants to ensure you replace a screen which actually needs replacing!

Cracked screen

If your phone's screen has cracked, it doesn't mean that you need a new phone—it just means that you need a new screen. Cracks make it harder to use your device because they block some of the sensors on your phone, meaning that they may not work properly or at all.

Cracked screens are also more likely to get worse with time as they get scuffed up by keys or other items in your pocket or bag. This can eventually lead to more serious problems like water damage if left untreated.

Non-responsive touch display

If your iPhone is not responding well to touch, it's simply time to replace your screen. A non-responsive screen may be due to physical or water damage. Although not very common, there could simply be a loose connection between the digitizer and motherboard.

Dead pixels

A dead pixel is one that doesn't change colour with its surrounding pixels. If there are multiple dead pixels clustered together in an area of about 1-2 inches in diameter, it may be time for you to replace your screen. This is because these large clusters are likely to spread over time. If they do spread, then your image quality will suffer significantly.

Blank screen on power

If you can't see anything on your iPhone's display when you turn it on, first make sure that the cable between the digitiser and the motherboard isn't loose. If it’s securely seated in the connection, it’s time to replace your screen.

iPhones which exclusively use LCD screens include the iPhone XR, iPhone 11 and all the models before the iPhone X including the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus and so on.
